The trigger for the strike was the NCB's alleged plan to close down Cortonwood mine..except there was no such plan. Coming from a mining family as I do, Union activity had resulted in miners being paid really well in the early seventies. So much so it was cheaper to ship coal in from Japan than mine it here. From that point on it was fucked, and whether it was Thatcher or someone else, the industry could not continue being subsidised by the taxpayer. Sad but true, it was fucked over by Scargill just like BL was by Derek Robinson. The unions fucked up the country entirely... they were destroying every industry and throttling the life out of this country for years, demanding 3 times the pay for half the work, right when the "third world" or the far east was gearing up on £1-a-day labour .. we knew it, they knew it, the cunts ignored it and the powermad wankers, who were half bent anyway, went right ahead and fucked everyone... all with the excuse of "I'm doing it for the people"... fuck off..... I decided the leave the Union game when I had to represent a guy who had been off sick from his workplace for over six months, and who had been doing overtime for the whole six months in another office !!!
