His sporting success in 2021 amounted to him being one half (diving partner Mattie Lee being the other 50%) of a team that won a gold medal in the 10m synchronised diving at the Tokyo Olympics.

A commendable achievement, particularly as this was his fourth attempt / opportunity to do so.

Nonetheless, I'd argue that it pales into insignificance beside Tom Dean's achievement of becoming he first male British swimmer to win two gold Olympic medals at the same games in 113 years. Or Jonny Brownlee finally winning an Olympic Gold, also as part of a team (triathlon mixed relay).

It's almost as if there's another reason behind this nomination of this (in Olympic medal winning and purely sporting terms) unremarkable athlete?
