Think what this country could be with American gun laws.

A bloody mess.  We definitely don't want to head in that direction.  At least in this country, you know that a drunken argument might lead to a fist fight, or at worst a knife fight, but its going to be unlikely that you have any homicidal schizophrenics roaming around with automatic weapons.  I would prefer to keep the UK civil population largely unarmed.

You would be dead in a high school massacre, caught out fiddling in the girls toilets by an enraged ex- security guard maniac, who would take out his pent-up lust on your already prolapsed arsehole before shooting you in the head.

Thalidomide tried that and it didn’t end up well.

It did for this bloke who used to drive around with a free Ford Fiesta with ‘Birkenhead’s small arms dealer’ on it betting people he could do a handstand.

I am going to hazard a guess that knife crime was virtually unheard of up about 1955 and has been something introduced by ethnic communities from countries where there was no tradition of settling arguments with fists, principally Jamaica and now Africa and the Middle East not to leave out Europe and Eastern Europe where the knife is a cult.

A few of the weirdos here would probably be looking for a homosexual maniac while a homicidal maniac was creeping up on them.

Actually there were quite a few flick knives and butterfly knives in circulation in the 70s, and even in the fifties there would be a few people who carried straight razors, and they would all be white British.

In Glasgow in the fifties you'd have been considered homosexual if you didn't carry a straight razor.

The homosexuals would carry gay razors to avoid any confusion. Was there such a thing as a Bi razor or a lezzer blade back then?

The 'flickhammer' was very popular among the Dublin underworld. They tried razors but often struggled to find somewhere to plug them in.

‘Flickhammer Ruddock’ doesn’t roll off the tongue as easily as ‘Razor’.

Plenty of flick knives around in the 60s .. in the late 50s/early 60s every self respecting ted would have either a flick knife or a sheaf knife and some of them would also carry their dad's old pistol that he nicked from a jerry during the war..

Yes, but that was the exception to the rule. Once a fight got going anything went bottles bits of wood etc. But the act of tooling up with a knife was confined to a very small number of criminals. Unfortunately as metal detector traps at tube stations have shown it has become far more common.
