Apparently the role was originally offered to the guy shooting gooks from the chopper. But Ermey went into Kubrick's office asking for the part. Kubrick was sitting at his desk and mumbled that it had already been cast. With this Ermey shouted something like "Stand up when you address me you fucking maggot" which made Kubrick nearly shit himself and automatically snapped to attention.
