Black cabs will go the same way as the high street, gone because people will always gravitate towards the cheaper alternative. When the Black cabs finally disappear from London' s streets it can in no way be the fault of Uber, it's down to the paying customer that chooses to opt for the cheaper alternative.

London tourists will probably keep the black cabs alive. My one gripe with 'em, is their poxy meter's which eat-up money whilst stuck in traffic, and many Taxi drivers know this even though they are meant to stick to the quickest routes. It's arguable how many don't.

Good point, but in that case black cabs will be something akin to the tourist Route Masters that now ply the west end. The difference between a Black cab driver and a Uber driver is that if you left an aritcle of luggage in the back of black cab the licenced cabby would hand it into the nearest police station whereas the Uber driver probably wouldn't. On top of that the Uber driver is probably a rapist so try not to leave your Missus in the back of and Uber car.

Also of course, is that just as with the yellow taxi's in New York, our black ones are instantly recognisable and as you say, they do offer additional security and peace of mind, which from a tourists point of view is a good thing perhaps.  It will never happen, but maybe if they were subsidised (somehow) within the Capital itself, then they're a good thing, but their pricing as is current, sucks. A friend had to jump in one from Kings Cross to Victoria due to the Underground not running as should. He was charged £70, as he was stuck in the middle of some riot/demonstration and the cabs meter went awol. £70 for a journey that should have been far less than half that amount.

THEY, should have a thread of their own, the fucking things. Hardly any cyclist uses their designated lanes and the cost involved (let alone the road space taken away) makes them an additional  blot on the landscape.

Londoners, and I used to be one, think that paying seven quid for a cheese and ham sandwich is reasonable, so it's just London as they couldn't get away with that anywhere else, including New York. Again, I accept your point but I personally would never use Uber.
