Why is the chemical formula for water H2O? It's called a bipartisan issue. I think you can see the basis of why and how the Israeli state was created. There was a lot of flux after the War not least in the British Empire and this seems another sordid part of that mess. On the other hand my understanding of Israel today is that it's the Middle Eastern version of Prussia in the C18 a highly militarised society encircled by enemies fighting for survival. The key word is expansion. 67 gave Israel the opportunity and legal case to enlarge its borders though Nixon warned them at the time the occupied territories would become a burden and security risk. Netanyahu has now revealed what we all knew anyway given the Jews reputation in business, there is every intention of obstructing a Palestinian state and maintaining Israeli control over the whole area including Gaza and relegating Palestinians to second class citizens in an apartheid state. On the other hand how viable would any Palestinian state be as the Arab states seem unlikely to offer any financial or other support and the West isn't going to foot the bill. You'd have two broken dysfunctional states there instead of one. Like you I think it's intractable.
