If you have got a long straight level section of railway and a pair of binoculars, on a clear day you can observe this effect as the train appears to rise above the horizon as it comes towards you (I would like Punker's to try this by standing in the middle of the track and staying until the train passes over him). What tends to fuck up this effect on straight sections of canal are the bridges that are in the way. For those in Gloster it might be possible to see the horizon effect along the River Severn.
