One of the problems news media has is that readers think they are entitled to free content. Local news is being consolidated to regional hubs, the effect of this is editorial is bereft of content that is truly local. The quality of news gathering and content in the national papers is piss-poor 'cos experienced well paid hacks are being replaced by lower-paid recently qualified journo's, all of whom are on 11 month renewable contracts. Sub-editing is out-sourced to India with predictable results. One way for news organisations to generate income is adverts and click-bait. On-lines "news" written by interns and "citizen journalists" doesn't cut it. Purchase your news content or at the very least, let the ads through.

That backfires on them and does more damage than good as regardless of whether an individual is uses a adblocker they tend to share worthwhile articles and those shares are often to people who don't use adblockers. All too many local and other newspapers are no no longer paying photographers so it cuts in a number of ways.

Why do news sites want to essentially charge for the reporting of events when the events themselves were free to viewing public?  It seems that Johnny Jihadist or Mr. Desperate Public Cunt plotting to knife attack a gathering of protesting poofs need to sell admission to onlookers.

Are you in competition with the Indians for sub-editing contracts, Snowy?

I do enjoy and agree with this statement.  There is a good nom in there if you expand that idea.   All newspapers and even some main headline web sites and tv news are simply being fed by “copy journalism” all the time.     There is very little actual original investigative journalism being done and like you say, the editing is out of touch.  The world has never been more so complex and alive with issues and politics and conflict, yet our press can hardly fill a main tabloid or broadsheet with any originally sourced news material.   That’s why they are filled with pictures of minor celebrities pictures and stories of their new haircut or dress.   When the world is actually full of hard hitting goings on that are completely ignored.  Fact.

There is a contingent of punters here who will undoubtedly agree, I'm not that original or creative.

On balance, the internet and access to the world wide web is a good thing. That said, people need to wean themselves off the self-entitled attitude that everything should be free. Yes, adverts can be annoying (especially the pop-ups though that seems to be on the decrease) but we are  in danger on formulating opinion based by viewing social media memes. News media is undergoing a seismic change in response to the instant information now available by 24 hour news channels and via the web. However this is merely a headline digest. What appears to be a clear cut perspective changes if one bothers to look at the context and fine detail behind the story. Unfortunately proper analysis can only come from research and investigation which costs money. So, by all means use ad-blockers, refuse to pay for news and you will be poorer for it.

Fuck all that!

I don't want disturbing with some shitty advert for pile ointment when I'm sat rubbing one out over Chloe Morgane on my favourite porn site.

Roops is right. If you want to read premium content, you should expect to pay towards the associated costs of creating and distributing it.

The anarchic, free nature of the early internet was a wonderful thing but that’s behind us now, and the legacy it’s left is just a huge sense of entitlement for free content.

The reason I’ve never paid towards the upkeep of the corner is that I don’t think anyone can describe it as quality content. It’s a pile of utter dogshit and even as the corner’s top dog golden boy, I think it needs burning with fire.

Oh, and I don’t want proper having my PayPal email address. Fuck off proper.
