Guest Lady Penelope Posted December 5, 2017 Report Share Posted December 5, 2017 The harsh basic problem is that we have never been and never can be a fully participating member of the EU because it is simply not possible for us to produce and trade on level playing field with the rest of the EU because we are separated from it by that stretch of water that means that whatever we sell to the rest of the EU has to pass through either a sea port an airport or a restricted double track railway. Thus the only real opportunities we have are either becoming some kind of financial or tax haven or tourism. For most tourists the UK is simply London, Stratford-on-Avon or Edinburgh. If it imposes WTO tarriffs we simply say we will not impose them for two years to give them time to see sense or we will simply follow their lead and receive a net £7BN a year in taxes after that. As regards Ireland, we simply refuse ever to impose a hard border or internal customs checks. If that means we lose some revenue then so be it. This is the price of peace and harmony within the British Isles and we should accept it. Put the onus on the EU to impose a hard border and see the reaction within Northern Ireland and the Republic. As far as the politics of this plays out with the DUP - fuck 'em! The present arrangement is the closest they will get to real power and if they are prepared to throw that away and risk a more hostile, Corbyn-led Labour government, then that's their lookout. You cannot have the tail wagging the dog. Let the EU strike first and let them harm trade and undermine their global free trade commitments, stability in Ireland, citizens' rights etc. We just sit back and let them make things worse if they dare.
