The UK is likely to be saved by an obscure line from the GMC’s Good Medical  Practice, which states, or at least it used to, that any doctor refusing a treatment on the basis of his/her moral objection must ensure the patient is referred to another provider happy to do the necessary. In the last few years of my working life this led to all sorts of chicanery where patients were horse-traded across doctors on the basis of moral judgements which made me queasy. Personally I was quite happy to see a teenage girl impregnated by a spotty youth on the swings have the good sense to get help early. And if it meant as a quid pro quo I could send my pious colleagues a fat yeasty woman needing a shelf pessary on a hot day, I was more than happy to run the risk of eternal damnation.
