I know next to nothing about modern guns, but I've got more than a passing interest in antique weaponry.

I watched a good YouTube video recently asking why archers weren't utilised during the age of the musket. I've always pondered this myself. From the 18th century onward, next to no armour was warn on a battle field, and due to linear warfare, your enemy lined up and stood there conveniently, which would mean absolute slaughter for them if faced with a battalion of archers capable of shooting 12 arrows per minute. Facing off against an enemy capable of firing three rounds a minute, with next to no accuracy beyond 50 yards, you'd think it would be a no brainer.

The video answered most questions as to why this didn't happen, but the most telling of which seems to be that you can't just master a heavy war bow after months of training. It takes years to develop the strength, physique and technique in order to become proficient, and by the 18th century no one was trained to do this.

I'm not sure when exactly training of bowmen died out but it was law that males over a certain age had to practice archery every (Sunday?).  The target they used was called a 'butt'. There's a place called Newington Butts in London where archery was practiced.
