There were indeed pressures on the wages employers had to pay to the workers, as unemployment reached the lowest levels ever, so the incentive to load the boats and ship in some cheap slaves was irresistible. The demographics were stable, so no growing army of cheap hands was coming and they knew it. Eastern Europe was behind the curtain, so no luck poaching from over there.

Once India and China opened up their markets, the jobs were swiftly moved over to those destinations. What propelled it faster was the growing energy and waste regulation in the West and cancellation of capital controls (a pesky earlier problem), so several issues less to worry about doing business in shithole countries. A hundred slaves for a quid and cheap piles of coal - what's not to like?

All I want is a return to the mixed economy and a removal of the British class system by brute force to get it. The globalisation everybody complains about is not the real problem its the way the 1066 Establishment in the UK has never been seriously challenged or forced to reform or accept change, i. e. to modernise. Every trick in the pokitical book, every cultural and social tool, every technological opportunity including digital has been exploited to one end - to maintain their position at the expense of the long term future of the British people.
