It appears I'll be flying in - time to be doing my stuff, then back to London. Shame, the old trawlers seemed intriguing. Are they berthed or beached?

Most are still berthed at the docks - but you can occasionally see a few that have been dragged out to a repair yard upriver that have basically rusted through.

Here's some pics of the ones in dock - as you can see some of the ones closest to the moorings have been there for a long time - the ones on the outer edge still occasionally go out, but I've been told there was about three times the number and all in better condition back in the day - these angles don't really do it justice but if you ever visit in person you'll see that the water is always oily as shit from all the leaky machinery too:

I assuming the lens is an EF and not EF-S otherwise there would be compatibility issues, not least making the A7 work with a 1.6 crop. Canon's nifty-fifty is on its third itineration and an excellent piece of glass it is too, considering the price.

The old 50mm can be found for around £50 .. there are also a few Chinese copies that are ok, I am not bothered about having to use MF as focus peaking does the work for my poorly eyes.

You kind find similar at Brixham, most though are still in use but some of the ones still at work look like they are starting to rot away.

Hopefully the industry might get some new life if we get full control of the fishing waters again, but I'm doubtful.

The shittiest looking place in Newcastle is, or was that grotty black beach in the final act of 'Get Carter'. There was a cable car arrangement, carrying skiploads of what looked like coal slag and dumping it in the water. Do you know the place it was filmed?

More good news to bring joy to the Heart of middle England, and no doubt grist to the mill for our resident Armchair Economists:

The Pound Sterling now regarded as a 2nd tier currency and is “best compared to the Mexican Peso, with an Economy that is small and shrinking”. Hands up if you’re tired of winning yet....

A currency is volatile due to major political event and economic downturn due to worldwide pandemic. Not exactly shocking news. Let me guess, you blamed capitalism and not the rank incompetence and arrogance of the Labour government when everything went tits up in 2008.

Every national leader and his finance minister will apply the Covid excuse when explaining why a country's economy tanked. Obviously sterling was going to be subject to volatility given the UK was leaving a rigid closed shop that is the EU trading bloc and take advantage of trading with greater agility on the open world stage. The situation was made far worse due to the losing side using every trick in the book to frustrate the will of a democratically mandated instruction to leave.

Thanks for that. I like my pics to tell a story or convey a message. By doing a quick and dirty processing job on one of the images I'll explain. Firstly I would have shot on a 1:1 format so there is nothing to distract the viewer. A combination of sharpening some detail and reducing the image saturation would accentuate the decay on the boats and the jetty wall. Slap on a "stormy clouds are gathering" either from my own or from freely available pre-sets would forewarn that tough times lie ahead. See what I mean below...

Ideally, one could shoot the image with a slow shutter speed by using a neutral density filter which would make the water look silky smooth - a  metaphor of decaying trawlers becalmed by the economic climate .

Of course they will but there were omens before Covid that a downturn was on the way. Shrinking house price inflation, record levels of personal debt and less than expected wage growth are usually a sign of worse to come. The UK was never going to exit the EU smoothly whatever the scenario but the government hasn't exactly covered itself in glory with its cackhanded PR approach on keeping the country informed about trade talks with the rest of the world. We are told that there are talks with the US, Australia and Canada but very little about what is going on. There's been practically nothing about the talks with Japan or Mexico and it seems India is being ignored completely despite putting out some positive overtures.

In my opinion, the UK economy is never going to be the same again simply because Covid has rapidly accelerated the demise of high street retail and many businesses have realized that they can cut costs with some of its employees working from home. However, it would would ease fears if the government spelled out exactly where we are on developing our independent trade policy rather than piecemeal announcements every now and then.

That was actually filmed in Blyth, Blast beach I think it's called and was actually the exact same beach they used in Alien 3 for the exterior shots of the planet with the rusting machinery superimposed in. It was slag being dumped but it was cleaned up a long time ago in real life.

I had always wondered what location was used for Alien 3. That grim fucking shithole was perfect.

The subprime bubble doesn't explain the lack of regulation on UK banks which enabled egotistical cunts like Fred the shred to rape and pillage the financial sector eventually costing the taxpayer 300 billion quid. Gordon Brown knew well in advance that his mates were playing monopoly safe in the knowledge that the treasury would have to bail them out if it went wrong. Brown didn't give a fuck and was happy to let them get on with it as long as the money kept rolling in to fund Labour's tax and spend policies. Take your rose tinted glasses off you imbecile.

He wears shit tinted spectacles due to his penchant for arse licking the wrong side of an argument and... everything else.

We actually have some of the nicest beaches in the country up here. Cunt in the summer usually when the roads get blocked up with spackers hoping they'll lose a sprog to the tide by letting them play in those death trap inflatable toy boats you can get for a fiver.

I've no idea what you just explained, but I like the finished result - very gritty. Makes it look like a much older photo.

Absolute bollocks, honestly. It looks fucking dreadful and obviously fake because it's not what the eye records.

What's more is you're blowing your own trumpet (what a surprise!) through trying to sound ultra-skilled and technical:

'Firstly I would have shot on a 1:1 format so there is nothing to distract the viewer. A combination of sharpening some detail and reducing the image saturation would accentuate the decay. One could shoot the image with a slow shutter speed by using a neutral density filter...'

What the fuck, seriously? Get back in the kitchen, or better still, show us how to manipulate another soft-porn photo of your snatch taken 30-odd years ago.
